topPower Converter Architecture

A static VAR compensator (var is defined as volt ampere reactive) is a set of electrical devices for providing fast-acting reactive power on high-voltage electricity transmission networks. SVCs are part of the Flexible AC transmission system device family, regulating voltage, power factor, harmonics and stabilising the system. Unlike a synchronous condenser which is a rotating electrical machine, a static VAR compensator has no significant moving parts (other than internal switchgear). Prior to the invention of the SVC, power factor compensation was the preserve of large rotating machines such as synchronous condensers or switched capacitor banks.

SVC is composed of two components.

    • Harmonic Filters :
    • BEQ1 : They are composed of capacitors and coil tune for different harmonics. For SPS-Machine, we have 8 filters for harmonics 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and HF. That SPS filters take 92MVar from network

BB3 : They are composed of capacitors and coil tune for different harmonics. For SPS-Machine Cp AUX at BB3, we have 1 filters for harmonics HF. That SPS filters take 18MVar from network

    • SVC-BEQ1 installed for MACHINE 18kV at SPS was bought in 1973- Since 2008 it’s only a standby spare, ready on EMD3 at BE , to replace BEQ2 or BEQ3 in case of a fault on them. When SPS has been upgrade in 80’s an auxiliary Compensator has been installed at BB3 in 1981, on loop Machine from 18kV - EMD1 at BE. Cp Aux BB3 never works alone. BEQ1 may replace BEQ2 (who compensate only bus bar EMD2), but only in degraded mode because in that
